Arthropods are the largest animal phylum, with over one million species identified. Arthropods are able to survive on dry land because they have a waterproof exoskeleton (a skeleton outside the body). The skeleton does not bend, so the limbs of arthropods are jointed to allow the animals to move. Inside, the body is divided into segments, which are sometimes visible as lines across the exoskeleton. Flies, spiders, crabs, prawns and millipedes are all examples of arthropods.
